Primary care
An important part of staying healthy is finding a provider—often called a primary care provider (PCP)—who is your main contact for routine visits. Your PCP knows you, your medical history and is the best option for general health management.
Virtual health
For nonemergency situations, providers (including pediatricians) are available online – 24/7/365. Some health plans include virtual options for primary care and mental and behavioral health in addition to urgent care.
Urgent care or walk-in clinic
Sometimes you want to see someone as soon as possible and your PCP is not available. Urgent care may be appropriate if you have a need that requires timely in-person medical attention but is not severe or life-threatening. Issues like sprains, X-rays, minor broken bones, infections, small burns, minor cuts and fever can often be treated at an urgent care clinic.
Most urgent care/walk-in clinics have extended hours and serve patients on a first-come, first-served basis. Make sure an urgent care/walk-in clinic is part of your network to avoid out-of-pocket costs.
Emergency care
Emergency care is for health problems that may occur suddenly and need immediate attention. If you believe your life or health is in danger, call 911 or go to an emergency room (ER) right away.
The ER is often the most expensive place to get care unless you have a true emergency medical condition. Certain emergency care is covered by your insurance but nonemergency care delivered in an ER could result in a large bill. Plan ahead by making sure you know which ER is in your network if ever needed, especially those not affiliated with a hospital or hospital system.
Stay in-network to save costs
A common (and costly) mistake people make is using providers who are not in their health insurance's network.
What is a network?
A network is a group of healthcare providers (doctors, dentists, hospitals, surgical centers, etc.) that have an agreement with the health insurance company to provide services to its members at a discounted rate. We negotiate that lower price for you. As a member, all you pay is your out-of-pocket costs which may include a copay, coinsurance or a deductible depending on your specific health plan.
Care from an out-of-network provider almost always costs more. Your copay is higher and the provider may bill you for charges above what your plan allows, known as balance billing. These costs may not apply to your deductible or out-of-pocket maximum.
